Dec. 6, 2007 Human relations classes complete service-learning projects MITCHELL – DWU students completed a service-learning project as part of a human relations class during fall semester. Students participated in activities at James Valley Community Center and visited with residents at Wesley Acres. The students also volunteered at the Salvation Army by working in the thrift shop, cleaning the parking lot, working in the food pantry, wrapping gifts, helping in the kitchen and carrying heavy boxes. “Service-learning continues to be a significant component of the methodologies used in the education department,” said Gloria Leonard, associate professor of education and psychology at DWU. “We can choose what the students learn in the classroom, but outside the classroom students need to develop their own curriculum in their quest for knowledge. The students, themselves, need to find the value of these experiences.” For more information about the education curriculum at DWU, visit www.dwu.edu/education. |
