Nov. 2, 2007 Service-learning project at LifeQuest
MITCHELL – DWU psychology students completed a service-learning project at LifeQuest on Sept. 18. Psychology students of Anne Kelly and Randy Sprung spent three hours with clients of LifeQuest and toured the facility. They learned about the types of work that LifeQuest clients do, and participated in recreational, vocational and leisure activities with the clients. Led by a student from Hawaii, one group taught clients how to Hula dance. Other groups played Bingo and Memory. “I have always enjoyed working with people who have special needs,” said Mason Hebert, Waco, Texas. “Taking just a few hours of my time to plan and organize a service project and to spend time with people really means a lot.” Students who participated with Hebert were Ekekela Watson, Lahaina, Hawaii; Christine Stroman, Sioux Falls; Wendy Schmaltz, Mission; Bridget Shriver, Brookings; and Eric Caylor, Ethan. “I really enjoyed learning about the cognitive and developmental skills clients must have to complete the work at LifeQuest. It really showed how psychology can be applied,” said Kelly. “It was also neat to see how my students worked together and approached the project.” For more information about the psychology department at DWU, visit www.dwu.edu/psych. |
