Panel discussion on SD Referred Law 6

MITCHELL – The McGovern Center at Dakota Wesleyan University will host a panel discussion about the 2006 vote to ban abortion in South Dakota on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in classroom 222 of the McGovern Library.

Dusty Johnson, S.D. PUC Commissioner and McGovern Visiting Professor of Leadership and Public Service, will moderate the discussion on the events, decisions and strategies surrounding Referred Law 6. Panelists are Kate Looby, director of South Dakota Planned Parenthood; Denise Ross, journalist and documentary filmmaker; and Lee Schoenbeck, former president pro tem of the South Dakota senate.

The panelists will not debate the merits of the abortion arguments, but will analyze the 2006 vote from a policy perspective. Footage from the soon-to-be-released documentary “Unplanned Democracy,” about Referred Law 6, will be shown.

The discussion is part of the Public Service: Policy Formation class taught by Johnson. The discussion is open to the public.
