C-SPAN Book TV to cover McGovern Conference

MITCHELL – The 2007 McGovern Conference, “The ’72 Presidential Campaign: A Living Legacy,” will be Tuesday, Nov. 6 in the Sherman Center at Dakota Wesleyan University. The event is free and open to the public.

C-SPAN announced this week that it will tape the McGovern Conference for future broadcast.

C-Span Book TV“It’s exciting that C-SPAN recognizes the importance of this conference,” said Don Simmons, director of the McGovern Center. “Sen. George McGovern is ready to welcome back some of his staffers as well as scholars who’ve studied the lasting effects of his presidential campaign.”

Speakers/Authors featured at the conference are Donald Critchlow, Bruce Miroff, Curtis Austin and James Armstrong. Sen. McGovern will conclude the event with his comments and response to those sessions.

Donald Critchlow, professor of history at St. Louis University and editor of the “Journal of Policy History,” will present "The Conservative Ascendancy: How the GOP Right Made Political History."

Bruce Miroff, professor of political science at the State University of New York at Albany, will present "The Paradoxical Legacies of the McGovern Campaign."

Curtis Austin, associate professor of history at the University of Southern Mississippi and he’s the founding director of the Center for Black Studies, will present "The Black Panther Party and the Changing Political Landscape."

James Armstrong, adjunct professor of religion and philosophy at Rollins College, will present "Defining Moments and the Promise of the Future."

Speakers at the conference will sign their books from 11:50 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. in the Sherman Center Lobby. More information about each author is available at www.mcgoverncenter.com/conference/speaker.htm.

The conference will begin with a panel discussion, “What a Difference It Made in My Life," featuring former staffers Teresa M. Petrovic, Mary Fifield, Scott Lilly and Tom Southwick. While their careers began with the McGovern campaign, they have gone on to a variety of careers in public policy and the private sector.
