May 5, 2008 Bishop Armstrong award winner named
MITCHELL – Robbie Salmonson, Plankinton, was named the 2007-08 recipient of the Bishop Armstrong Award for Peace and Justice at DWU during the Baccalaureate service on May 3. Salmonson provided leadership at the St. Dysmus worship service at the State Penitentiary and Habitat for Humanity projects; participated on two mission teams to Tanzania; raised awareness about the homeless through Freezin’ for a Reason; and worked to abolish South Dakota’s youth death penalty. He was the worship leader on campus for two years, encouraging campus worshippers not only to pray for hunger and poverty to end, but to actively work for its eradication through initiatives like the ONE Campaign and Habitat for Humanity. The Bishop Armstrong Peace and Justice Award was established by the DWU Board of Trustees in honor of the 12 years Bishop A. James Armstrong served in the Dakotas. This award is presented each year to students or staff whose life has demonstrated the relationship between religious faith and issues of peace and justice. |
