MITCHELL – Sean Flynn, associate professor of history at DWU since 1999, was named the 2007-08 Clarke Award winner during Commencement ceremonies May 3.

Flynn’s nominators noted his dedication to academic excellence in his students as well as himself, his stature as a leader among the faculty and his gift for teaching. Flynn has published two books, scholarly articles and book reviews; he’s spoken at academic conferences and community events; and he did research while on sabbatical that he hopes to synthesize into a third book. As a faculty member, he serves on various committees, and he currently serves as the division chair for social sciences.

The award is considered the highest honor for a DWU faculty member. Selection criteria for the Clarke Award include excellence in teaching, excellence in serving the needs of students and service to the institution and to the community. The academic affairs committee of the DWU Board of Trustees makes the final selection. This award was endowed in 1997 by John and the late Vicki Clarke of Mitchell. The award is presented to one faculty member each year at Commencement.
