MITCHELL – Heath Eggleston, Howard, Colo., plans to travel to Anchorage, Alaska to be involved in a treeline ecology study project in the Noatak National Preserve from June 1 to August 8.

Eggleston is a junior biology major at DWU and the assistant resident director of Allen hall.

While in Alaska, Eggleston will study under Bjartmar Sveinbjornsson, University of Alaska - Anchorage, whose research consists of an assortment of ecologies that range from treeline to global change.

“I applied to this program hoping to experience something that I could not at Dakota Wesleyan,” said Eggleston. “I look forward to learning things that I can bring back to Dakota Wesleyan to teach other students.”

His internship is part of the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Eggleston was also selected again to participate in the Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) Summer Research Fellowship program at the University of South Dakota.

“This program rewards hard-working students like Heath by allowing for opportunities outside their own university,” said Anthony Cole, Eggleston’s academic adviser and assistant professor of biochemistry at Dakota Wesleyan University. “While the BRIN program selects students within South Dakota, the REU program selects students on a national level.

“Needless to say, I am very proud of Heath,” added Cole. “He’s opened a door that I hope other DWU students will go through."
