April 3, 2009 Nursing students take honors at state nursing conference
MITCHELL – Dakota Wesleyan University Associate of Arts nursing students and advisers, 23 from Mitchell and 12 from Huron, recently attended the annual Nursing Students Association of South Dakota (NSASD) convention in Yankton. DWU has two divisions of Student Nurses’ Association (SNA) – Mitchell and Huron. Each association is allowed to nominate one student for the Outstanding Nursing Student of South Dakota competition, and that candidate completes an essay and an interview at the convention. Whitney Weier, Mitchell, was selected by her classmates to represent DWU’s Mitchell SNA. Kimberly Miller, Huron, was the candidate nominated by DWU’s Huron SNA. Candidate eligibility requirements include academic excellence; ability to work well in team relationships; ability to recognize and meet physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs of the client; demonstrate sense of responsibility in carrying out nursing assignments and knowledge of current events; and a range of interests extending beyond nursing. Second-year nursing students from the Huron site, Miller; Tanya Plagmann, Cavour; Desiree Rand, Huron; and Melissa Tompkins, Huron; won the statewide quiz bowl competition at the convention. They were awarded a traveling trophy to be displayed at the Huron nursing program site until the 2010 state convention. Stacy Auch, Mitchell, will serve at the state level as the 2009-10 NSASD President. Lizz Waldow, Mitchell, will serve as the 2009-10 NSASD Parliamentarian.
