MITCHELL – Ashley Thelen’s science fair project, a winner at the South Central South Dakota Science and Engineering Fair at DWU, was recognized at The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2009 in Reno, Nev.

Thelen, a junior at Mitchell Senior High, daughter of Corey and Lisa Thelen, was awarded $1,000 as a third place winner in the medicine and health sciences division for her project, “Does Red Wine Every Day Keep the Grey Hair Away?”

Thelen investigated a substance called resveratrol that is produced naturally by red grapes. Evidence exists that resveratrol can promote human health. Anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging effects have been reported in animals.

Thelen’s research showed that resveratrol, at the proper dose, enhanced growth and regeneration at the cellular level of California blackworms.

In addition to DWU, sponsors of the South Central South Dakota Science and Engineering Fair include The Daily Republic, Your Touchtone Energy Cooperatives, Sixth District Medical Society, Logan Luxury Theatre and Twin City Fan Companies LTD.
