DWU will take part in hunger summit
in Toronto
MITCHELL, S.D. — Education and world hunger – and how to
better combine the two to decrease the latter – will be the main
focus of the Universities Fighting World Hunger Summit in Toronto in February.
Dakota Wesleyan and the McGovern Center will be represented by two student
delegates and two faculty delegates at the summit, which will take place
Feb. 25-Feb. 27. Members of the delegation include DWU professors Dr.
Brian Patrick and Dr. Donald Simmons, and students Chase Kristensen, Plankinton,
and Mario Palencia, Huntington Park, Calif.
“We expect to have about 500 delegates in attendance at the Summit,
representing universities from across the globe. The McGovern Center and
DWU’s participation will add much to our discussions,” said
Gavin Armstrong, UFWH Organizer.
Some of the lectures will focus on academia and how students and campuses
can take their initiatives global and spark conversations within their
own community. Other speakers will also cover community involvement, media,
government agencies and how to inspire change.
“The purpose of the pre-summit is to identify the significance
of curricular and co-curricular learning, especially in relation to hunger
and poverty issues, and to recognize barriers and find solutions to embed
and sustain the value into an institutional culture,” states the
UFWH website.
