Often-Encountered Problems

1. Error message states: "Value entered for field is not valid. Valid values listed in message help."

Often this indicates that a field was overwritten with an invalid value. The highlighted box indicates what field is incorrect. Most often, this has happened with the "Active Field." If it is the "Active" field (it may say Active or ACT?), replace the invalid value with either an "I" or an "A". Fields that can be answered with a yes or no (such as "Active Students Only? " or "Jobq (Y/N") ) are looking for a Y or an N.

2. Error message states: "Cursor in protected area of display".

This indicates that the cursor is not in a place where you can type anything. Press the tab key to position the cursor to a field that will accept typing.

3. Error message states: 'Scan limit reached - ROLLUP/PAGE DOWN to scan further records."

The system was unable to access all of the records before it timed out with a partial list. To see the reminder of the records, use the "page down" key. This will prompt the system to find the remainder of the records.

4. You are on a screen that you have never seen, or had no intention of using.

Press F3 to get back to a menu screen. Often this is the safest way to exit if you are totally lost.

5. You pressed "enter" or F10 and nothing is happening.

Check the left hand bottom of the screen. If there is a white "X SYSTEM", the AS400 is still trying to process your request. Wait until the X SYSTEM disappears. If the bottom left corner of the screen has a red "X ?+", the system recorded a keystroke that it was not ready to process. Press the RESET (left CTRL key) to reset the keyboard.

6. The system is taking too long to process a job.

If you want to cancel a job that is taking too long, hold down the SHIFT key and press the ESC key (upper left side of the keyboard.) When the Aqua blue line appears on the screen, type '2' (no quotes) and press enter. You may have to wait a few minutes, but eventually the system should take you back to a menu screen. If after doing these steps, the AS400 does not appear to respond to keystrokes like "F12" or "F3", repeat the process with the SHIFT/ESC key.
