The Religion-Philosophy Department at DWU offers programs of preparation and several majors to fit a variety of students. These programs include: RELIGION-PHILOSOPHY MAJOR/MINOR for general students, who may not be planning on a vocation in this area, but who want an opportunity to pursue their interests, and develop a good background in the field. RELIGION-PHILOSOPHY MAJOR/MINOR with
pre-seminary emphasis. A special set of courses, including
Practicum in Church Work and Contemporary
Theology, are helpful to students wanting to pursue the Candidacy
for Ministry process, and/or prepare a background for Seminary
and Church work. RELIGION-PHILOSOPHY MAJOR 3-3 program allows select non-traditional students to accelerate their college and seminary training time from 7 to 6 years, by counting the first year of seminary as the fourth year of the bachelor's program. THE CHURCH MUSIC MAJOR, offered through the Music Department, provides skills and background knowledge for performance in keyboard and voice, as well as leadership of choirs and administration of larger music programs. May be taken with a minor in religion, and may be taken with or without plans for seminary and ordination. PARISH NURSE PROGRAM, coordinated through the Nursing Department provides training experiences for nurses who want to work as Parish Nurses in church or institutional settings. A pilot program at Mitchell's Wesley Acres Retirement Residence, and an annual Spiritual Care Conference sponsored by the Religion and Nursing Departments help prepare nurses for this new and expanding field. THE INDIVIDUALIZED MAJOR/MINOR provides opportunities for special interdisciplinary programs which would help prepare students to work in other church-related areas such as workers in Christian Education, Church Administration, or other types of Diaconal ministry. |
