Student Support Services Federal
Program Description
The program provides opportunities for academic development,
assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate
students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.
Student Support Services (SSS) projects also may provide grant aid to
current SSS participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants (# 84.063).
The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation
rates of its participants and help students make the transition from
one level of higher education to the next. This Student Support Services
Project is 100% federally funded at $234,234 annually.
Funded through a federal TRiO grant, Student Support Services
provides eligible undergraduate, BA degree seeking, students tutoring,
mentoring, counseling, disability services, multicultural activities,
educational workshops, financial literacy skills, career and graduate
school planning, and other resources designed to enhance students’
education and enable them to achieve a postsecondary degree.

Services provided by the TRiO Student Support
Services program are available to eligible students on the Mitchell
campus only. Services include:
Professional Mentoring
- Developed for the express purpose of giving students the best possible
chance to succeed in college, Student Support Services incorporates
professional mentoring including;
- Advice and assistance in course selection -Registration and
4 year graduation plans
- Midterm and final grade checks to enable good academic standing
- Connection to appropriate support resources
Free Peer Mentoring
- Our peer-to-peer mentoring program offers freshman the opportunity
to be matched with a successful junior/senior student. Peer mentors
help new college students acclimate to the DWU campus by providing
social opportunities and educational workshops throughout the year.
Peer mentors foster healthy peer relationships and create a positive
learning community.
Free Peer Tutoring services
- Tutoring services are available to all eligible students. Tutoring
is available in several disciplines through group or individual tutoring
sessions.
Personal Counseling
- Counseling is available for short-term needs. Individual and group
counseling services provided by the campus counselor include support
in coping with the pressures and problems of college life, group educational
sessions and individual counseling.
Academic, Career and Graduate School Planning
- Academic and Career Advising is available to assist with goal-setting
and exploration. Students will use career assessments, and other diagnostic
and learning tools to understand strengths, motivation and abilities.
Students can explore career options and research graduate school possibilities.
Disability Resources
- Specialized assistance is provided for students with physical,
psychiatric, and/or learning disabilities through facilitation of
appropriate resources. Documentation of the disability is required
to initiate services.
Book Loan Program
- The book program provides access to a limited supply of general
education text books. Active participants of the TRiO program may
be able to borrow the books for one semester. Ask your Success Advisor
for details.
Multicultural Activities
- This component of Student Support Services supports education and
celebration of diverse backgrounds. We offer activities and programs
that encourage respect, understanding and support of diversity.

- Successful Interviewing Strategies
- Financial management and literacy
TRiO Writing Center
- Professionals and trained tutors are available to assist students
in all stages of the writing process from brainstorming to the final
edit – and with all forms of writing from lab reports to ENG
111 research papers.

- Laptops
- Tape Recorders
- Personal Digital Assistants (PDA)
Direct financial assistance
- The TRiO Student Support Grant Scholarship may be available to currently
active SSS participants who are Federal Pell Grant recipients and
meet all requirements.
