Win a Chance to Sit in the Best Seat in the House
The Human Services Club is selling tickets for the “Best Seat in the House” – a fundraiser for the Davison County Child Protection Team. The “best seat” is a couch set up at the DWU vs. Hastings basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Corn Palace. The club will sell tickets, which are $2, on campus until Feb. 20, and tickets will also be sold at the game. Buy your chance to sit on the comfiest seat in the Corn Palace! Tickets are also available from Misty Cochran, Sarah Owens, Sarah Fathke and Pam Boline. All proceed will help the Child Protection Team purchase shaken baby prevention materials.

Psychology Club to Meet Tuesday
The Psychology Club will meet from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Java City in front of the fireplace for a meeting.

Indian Taco Sale Thursday
Oyate Ho Waste is having an Indian Taco Sale from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the Village. All of the proceeds are going to be donated to the Haiti Relief and Development Fund.

Sweetheart of a Sale
Shop at the Campus Bookstore for your Valentine and receive 20 percent off clothing purchases. Sale ends Friday, Feb. 12.

Friend de Car!
The Mitchell High School show choir Friend de Coup will detail cars as a Valentine’s Day fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Iverson's Chrysler Center. All proceeds will go toward the group’s trip to a national competition in Florida in March. Here’s what you get: hand wash and dry, windows washed inside and out, vacuumed interior and a red rose on the dash board! Suggested donation is $40 for a car and $50 for an SUV. To make an appointment, call 999-7497 or e-mail nancy.boyd@k12.sd.us.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day While Supporting Tanzania
Delicious food and visions of East Africa will put you in the mood for a virtual trip to see Kilimanjaro and the animals of the Ngorongoro Crater, plus a report of the last student trip to Tanzania! Join us for dinner and a silent auction from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, in the Wagner Chapel as students and DWU staff raise money for a trip to Tanzania in May. Tickets are $15 per person, available from Misty Cochran, Charity Kear, Rocky Von Eye, Sally Wickware-Thompson or Diana Goldammer in the student life office in the Village. The silent auction will have lots of Tanzanian crafts, baskets and beadwork – plus much more!

Credit/No Credit
Students may elect to take one course each semester on a credit/no credit basis. If you would like to request a credit/no credit grade, come to the registrar’s office before Friday, Feb. 12. Courses taken with this grading option are not applicable toward a major or minor unless approved by the department.

Human Services Club Sets Up Own Giving Tree
The Human Services Club will have the “Extremities Tree” set up in the McGovern Library runs through the month of February. They encourage donations of hats, mittens, gloves, socks, scarves and other winter items. All donations will be given to local agencies serving families in need. As winter gear is now on clearance in many stores, it would be a great time to pick up donations for the tree! If you have any questions, contact Misty Cochran or Pam Boline.

Want to Live in Grandy Alumni House Next Year?
Residence life is accepting applications for students wishing to live in the Grandy Alumni Service House for the 2010-11 academic year. If you are interested in this opportunity, pick up an application from the residence life office or e-mail Adam Jones at adjones@dwu.edu for an electronic copy. Applications are being accepted for both men and women, but the house will be gender specific (either all males or all females). You may apply as an individual or as roommates. Applications are due by noon Friday, Feb. 19.

Launch is Coming Back to Campus
The workforce isn’t just about getting a job – sometimes it’s about creating them.

Young entrepreneurs will once again descend upon Dakota Wesleyan University during the fifth annual Launch – an annual event created to expose students to the possibilities of being business owners. The conference will be Thursday, Feb. 25, on DWU’s campus.

The day’s events begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m. and will be held at the Sherman Center. Attendees can register at www.dwu.edu/SDLaunchConference, or call 800-952-3562 or 605-665-4408. Paid registration fees for faculty and students are available for a limited time through the South Dakota Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (SD EPSCoR). Founders’ Lecture Lunch ‘n’ Learn Series
The Founders’ Lecture Lunch ‘n’ Learn Series will begin again. All presentations will be at noon in Java City located in the McGovern Library. Bring your lunch or purchase on site.

March 31 – Sally Wickware-Thompson will present on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It is recommended that you watch the movie “Hotel Rwanda” prior to this presentation; several copies will be available for one-day checkout through the McGovern Library.

April 1 – Anne Kelly will present on mob psychology.

April 5 – Amy Novak will lead a book discussion on “Left to Tell” and “Led by Faith.”
*Both books are available to purchase for 20 percent off in the bookstore located in the library.

April 6 – Brandon Vetter will lead a panel on forgiveness and “moving on” with DWU students.

Scholarship/Research Opportunities

Edie Environmental Scholarship
Applications are available for the $500 Edie Environmental Scholarship. Applicants must be planning a career in environmental work in South Dakota, be a junior or senior with at least one year before graduation with a GPA of at least a 3.0, and be majoring in biology, wildlife management or sociology. The Governor’s Giant Vision Awards
Students – are you thinking about starting your own business? Enter your business plan in the Governor’s Giant Vision Student Competition for the chance to help make your vision a reality. Plus, you could walk away with $3,500 to help get your business off the ground! There is assistance available through the Kelley Center. AAUW Scholarship
The American Association of University Women of Mitchell is offering scholarships ranging from $100 to $300 in the form of a credit at the DWU Campus Bookstore for purchasing textbooks and educational supplies. To be eligible, an applicant must be a full-time, nontraditional junior woman (or a woman pursuing an associate’s degree with a year left at DWU) in any major with a GPA of 2.5 or above currently enrolled at Dakota Wesleyan University. Direct any questions or requests for an application to Laurie Langland at lalangla@dwu.edu or ext. 2134. The application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 18.

Hughes Scholarship Deadline Approaches
The DWU College of Healthcare, Fitness and Sciences is now accepting applications for the 2010 Hughes Scholarship. The Hughes Grant-in-Aid provides one or more current DWU students with funds to pursue an educational experience that is not available at Dakota Wesleyan. Some educational experiences that may be funded include, but are not limited to:

  • Summer courses at other colleges or field stations (U.S. or overseas)
  • Volunteer research internships with organizations such as Earthwatch
  • Travel to scientific meetings
  • Independent research

Criteria

  • Applicants must be current DWU students with a math or science major and have freshman, sophomore or junior standing.
  • Applicants must have at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 GPA in all math and science courses.
  • Applicants must show some ability to implement independent research.
  • Applicants must show how the award will positively affect their education.

Apply Now for the St. Joseph Hospital Scholarship
Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 St. Joseph Hospital Scholarship. To be eligible, students must have completed 45 semester hours of coursework with a major in biology, biochemistry, mathematics or psychology at DWU, have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA, and intend to pursue a career in medicine or a related field (e.g. optometry, occupational therapy, chiropractic medicine, physical therapy, podiatry, psychiatry, etc.). Vicki Clarke Memorial Scholarship
Applications are being accepted for the Vicki Clarke Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Leadership and Service. This scholarship is awarded annually to a sophomore, junior or senior (in the 2010-11 academic year) in good academic standing who has demonstrated the conviction and ability to model Clarke’s example of leadership and service. Recipients must apply for the scholarship by March 27 by completing an application, which can be obtained by e-mailing Emily George at emgeorge@dwu.edu. Then send the completed application to George at DWU Box 925 or emgeorge@dwu.edu. Recipient(s) will be selected by a vote of the college deans and provost.

Basketball Coaching Positions

Fifth Annual DWU Winter Golf Clinic
Dakota Wesleyan will host its fifth annual DWU Winter Golf Clinic Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center. The morning clinic will be from 9 to 11 a.m. with 8:30 to 9 a.m. registration; and the afternoon clinic will be from 1 to 3 p.m., with a 12:30 to 1 p.m. registration. Cost to participate is $25 per person. Participants can also pay $10 to have their golf swing recorded and analyzed. To register, call Adam Anderson at 995-2179, or e-mail him at adanders@dwu.edu. Academic Achievement Assistance (AAA) Times Change
Free academic achievement assistance is available to all DWU students. Tutors will be available from 8 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday by appointment on the second floor of the McGovern Library. There will be tutoring through group study tables or individual assistance; test prep – quizzing, studying assistance (note cards and other strategies); and basic writing assistance and study-table supervision. SDACCC BIG Job Fair
The SDACCC BIG Job Fair is being held at the Sioux Falls Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25. More than 140 representatives will be available to discuss both full-time jobs and internship opportunities for any interested students. As DWU students, pre-registration is only $5; forms may be picked up from Jacki Larson in the Village of Rollins Campus Center. Transportation will be provided and professional attire is required.

Math Club is Collecting Aluminum Cans
The Math Club is collecting aluminum cans as a fundraiser. Please save your cans from home and here at school. There are can containers in Smith Hall, outside the helpdesk office; in the basement of Smith; in the basement of campus center (east side by stairs); and in Allen and Dayton Hall. If you have cans at home but don’t want to bother bringing them to campus, Drs. Catalano or Von Eye will be glad to pick them up at your house. It is important that the cans are empty and contain no litter or other matter.

Golf Team Fundraiser

Off Campus

Speaker Open to Women of All Ages
The local MOPS group is hosting a free community event for women of all ages. Nationally known speaker, Elizabeth Hagen, author of "Organize with Confidence," will speak from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, Feb. 8, at the Assembly of God Church in Mitchell. Hagen has five children and an amazing testimony about how God has performed miracles in her life that took her from being overwhelmed to in control and overjoyed. Hunger Walk Meeting Set
The next organizational meeting for the CROP Hunger Walk will be noon Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Room 103 (use Rowley Street entrance). There will be planning meetings every two weeks. The walk date has been set for 9 a.m. April 24 with an alternative rain date of 1 p.m. April 25. The route has not been set yet. You can find out more about us on www.churchworldservice.org – CROP is endorsed by 36 denominations and has been having CROP walks since 1969 in more than 2,000 communities.

Rock: College
The Mitchell Wesleyan Church invites students to its weekly college worship service at 7:45 p.m. Sundays. The church is located on Sanborn Avenue, across from Taco John’s. All are welcome!
