1930s
Marguerite Sweeney Moore ex'32 celebrated her 90th birthday in California with relatives and friends. Marguerite lives in Laguna Hills, Calif.
Adeline Swenson Johnson '37 celebrated her 85th birthday with a party at Covenant Village in Northbrook, Ill. She is an active member of Glenview United Methodist Church.
Paul ex'37 and Jen Fairbrother '35 Shore, Cody, Wyo., celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this summer.
1940s
Agnes Bergquist Hatfield c'40 received the Rosalyn Carter Care Giving Award from Rosalyn Carter last October. Agnes lives in Bowie, Md.
Florence Lindblad Stechman '47 was inducted into the South Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame. Florence has been bowling since about 1939. She taught bowling as a physical education class while an instructor at DWU. Florence lives in Mitchell.
Douglas Berry '49 has recently published "A Ship Called Grace," a book he's been working on since 1978.
"A Ship Called Grace" is the story of a youth who can't justify what he sees in the slave trading with his faith. It is a story of conflict and adventure, with the secular triad of money, lust and power against the religious trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The book is available in Mitchell bookstores and at major online booksellers.
After graduating from Dakota Wesleyan University with a degree in English and minors in religion and history, Douglas spent most of his life in Mitchell and is retired from the car business. He has one other published work, "Man of One Book," a play concerning the life of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism

1950s
Baltus "Fritz" Fritzemeier '50 was inducted into the Washington High School Hall of Fame, Sioux Falls, on Nov. 11, 2000. Fritz and his wife, Mim Smith Fritzemeier '48, live in Sioux Falls.
Emerald Ernst Hall ex'50 moved into a retirement home in November of 1999. She is busier than she really wanted to be, but is enjoying her life.
Tom Long '51 was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in June in Fargo, N.D. He coached high school wrestling for 33 years in Rapid City. Tom and his wife, Mary, now live in Littleton, Colo.
George Kalb '52 is a part-time associate pastor at Bethel Baptist Church in Janesville, Wis. George and his wife, Lorraine Cairns Kalb c'52, live in Janesville.
Francis "Jack" '53 and Elizabeth "Betty" Price '54 Bassen led a mission trip to Costa Rica in June. Nineteen people from their church traveled together. The Bassens live in Rapid City.
Roger Tanquist '59 and his wife, Mardel, spent six months serving as volunteer interim directors of Ocean Park Retreat Center and United Methodist Camp at Ocean Park, Wash., where they live.
1960s
Paul Carlson '62 was named the Outstanding Faculty Member by the students in the history department at Texas Tech University. This is the second time he has received the honor. Paul and his wife, Ellen Opperman Carlson c'62, live in Ransom Canyon, Texas.
Mary Ann Beck Lulewicz B.A.'63, M.A.'90 retired from the Mitchell School District in May. She most recently taught kindergarten. Mary Ann and her husband, Jerry Lulewicz '62, plan to do some traveling in their retirement.
John Evans '64 retired from the Flandreau School District in May. He coached football, basketball and track over the last 31 years. John lives in Flandreau.
Bill Thayer '64 was recently recognized for 24 years of service and leadership at the Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa. Bill announced his retirement at the same time.
Stuart Crouse '65 recently retired after 35 years of teaching instrumental music. He is looking forward to playing golf all year. Stuart and his wife, Georgiann Crum Crouse '64, are enjoying their new twin grandchildren.
Janet Farris Miller '65 was recently a featured staff member of Parkston High School. Janet teaches English and has been part of the district for 10 years. She and her husband, Claude Miller '59, live in Parkston.
Judie Van Winkle Stewart '65 is the president of the Women's Democratic Party, is a Stephen Leader and Stephen Minister and serves on the state board of directors for education. Judie and her husband, Gordon, live in Kalispell, Mont.
Terry Kurtz '67 has completed his 34th year of teaching U.S. history and cinematography at Apple Valley High School. He also enjoys playing Christian league softball. Terry, his wife, Rebecca, and son, Robert, live in Victorville, Calif.
1970s
Ed Olson '70 was elected to the South Dakota senate last November. He is vice chair of the Education and Health and Human Services committees. Ed, his wife, Diane, and their children live in Mitchell.
Dorothy Getty Collett '71 has recently completed 30 years of service at the state library. She and her husband, Eugene, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this summer. The Colletts live in Pierre.
Marilyn Miller Forst '71 was recently selected as the principal at Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary School in Mitchell. She has most recently served as the principal at the Huron Middle School. Marilyn lives in Mitchell.
Paul Slocum '71 is beginning his 29th year as a physical therapist. Paul and his wife, Mildred, live in Mountaintop, Pa.
Richard Andersen '71 retired this spring after teaching sixth grade science for 30 years in the Mitchell school system. Richard and his wife, Marlene Dodd, will move to Florida, where he plans to play a lot of golf.
Rex Piercy '71 co-led the Iowa Annual Conference Volunteer in Mission team to Moscow, Russia, in July. Rex lives in Waukee, Iowa.
Alice Sharping '77 is a missionary and has worked in Mexico, Central America and the Sudan.
The Mitchell School District named MaryAnn Slater Scheuerle '72 the Teacher of the Year. MaryAnn teaches Spanish at the high school and middle school and art classes at L.B. Williams Elementary School and directs the high school drum line. She has been a part of the Mitchell School District for 11 of her 26 years of teaching.
MaryAnn notes that she chose teaching as a career because of three teachers who taught her. Her third grade teacher, her band director and her typing teacher all taught her more than the subjects they were teaching. Through these teachers MaryAnn learned that she could learn anything she wanted to know, how to work as a member of a team and how to never give up.
In her classroom MaryAnn treats all students as a gift to open in the classroom, and exposes them to possibilities, learning opportunities and achievements. She teaches about 500 students each week.
MaryAnn lives in Mitchell with husband, Paul, former DWU professor of music and daughter, Alyson, current DWU student.
1980s
Karla Mees '81 presented a poster, "Factor V Leiden Gene Mutation in Deep Vein Thrombosis," at the national conference of the Society of Vascular Nursing in April. Karla is a registered nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Patrick Blando AA'81 has been promoted to charge nurse. Patrick and his wife, Patricia, live in LaFeria, Texas.
Betty Oldenkamp '82 was recently appointed Secretary of Health and Human Services for the state of South Dakota. Betty lives in Fort Pierre.
Merry Musel '85 ran for one of two open seats on the school board in Aberdeen this spring. Merry is a registered nurse in the intensive care unit at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.
Tim Edwards '86 received the Pat Merrigan Award at the South Dakota College Personnel Association Conference in Spearfish. He has been an admissions representative at Mitchell Technical Institute since 1993. The award recognized SDCPA members who exhibit outstanding leadership at their institution and in their area of responsibility. Tim and his wife, Cindy Anderson Edwards AA'87, live in Mitchell.
Ben Janis '86 works for the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe as director of the Wildlife, Fish and Recreation Department. Ben and his wife, Lauralei, live in Lower Brule.
Rita Einck Phillips '88 recently accepted a job at Iowa State University as the book division manager at the university's bookstore. She has previously been the vice president of retail banking in Boone, Iowa. Rita and her husband, Kurt, live in Boone.
1990s
Cooper Garnos '91 is considering running for the U.S. House of Representatives. Cooper has been serving as a state representative. Cooper and his wife, Mary Carroll Garnos AA'91, live in Presho.
Ron Leiferman '91 started working for WR Berkley in December 2000, a holding company for insurance companies. He handles the data and voice communications for the corporation. Ron lives in Sioux Falls.
Kristy Gould '92 has recently started a position as an assistant professor of psychology at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Kristy and her daughter, Hanna, live in Decorah.
Nicole Morrison '96 has recently become the financial assistance counselor at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.
Jeanene McKelvey Sampson '96 has been named the 7-12 principal of the Whiting Public School in Whiting, Iowa. Jeanene graduated in August with a master's degree in K-12 administration.
Jennifer Nelson '96 is completing a residency program at the Center for Family Medicine in Sioux Falls. After completing the residency she will be a certified Doctor of Osteopathy.
Karmen Stellmacher '98 recently graduated from the Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She earned a master's degree in physical therapy and now lives and works in Aberdeen.
Carey Trapp Hansen '98 is working as a black belt on the Process Excellence team at Conseco Finance. She is also the senior high youth worker at Canyon Lake United Methodist Church. Carey, her husband, Jared, and their son, Devin, live in Rapid City.
Amy Cap Bailey AA'98 is a vascular ultrasound technician at Battle Creek Health Systems. Amy, and her husband, Cory, and son, Cade, live in Battle Creek, Mich.
Toby Russell '98 is back on the job with the Mitchell Police Department after a paralyzing snowmobile accident. He is working as an investigative technician and uses computer technology to preserve evidence and communicate with other law enforcement agencies.
Kelly Aslesen '99 and Shane Nisbet '99 are new officers with the Mitchell Police Department. Their work will include case investigations and traffic accidents.
2000s
Craig Goetz '00 is working at the Stadter Center in Grand Forks, Minn. He is a mental health technician.

Marcella Peterson Carr AA'85 married Charles Carothers April 27, 2001, in Reno, Nev. They live in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Terri Barnhouse Reif AA'91 married Jeffrey Claussen April 20, 2001, in Sioux Falls. The couple lives in Salem.
Laurie Sharp '97 married Jason Kor Feb. 17, 2001, in Mitchell.
Dustin Schramm '98 married Lisa Wince July 14, 2000. They live in Brookings.

Marwin '86 and Karen Gortmaker AA'87 Hofer announce the birth of a daughter, Brooklyn Sue, born April 9, 2001. Brooklyn joins sister, Kasey, at home in Aberdeen.
Sara Muir Jorgensen '87 and her husband, Jim, welcome a son, Clay Michael, born March 28, 2001. Clay joins sister, Johnna, and brother, Lane, at home in Mount Vernon.
Lisa Jansen Ziegeldorf AA'88 and her husband, Jason, have a new daughter, Jorie Marie, born Oct. 12, 2000. Jorie joins sister, Jessa, at home in Brandon. Lisa is a certified nurse practitioner in the emergency department at Sioux Valley Hospital.
Jeffrey Clendening '90 and his wife, Gena, announce the birth of a son. Garrett Ross was born in September 2000.
Stanna Starr Olinger '90 and her husband, Curt, welcome a daughter, Linzi Rae, born May 2, 2001. The Olingers live in Wessington Springs.
Brian Hildebrandt '90 and his wife, Chris, announce the birth of a daughter, Tristen Marie, born May 7, 2001. The Hildebrandts live in Mitchell.
Brett '91 and Julie Hart '89 Schutte announce the birth of a daughter, Jenna Robin, born March 16, 2001. She joins a sister, Kaylynn, at home in Mitchell.

Jada Jager Olmstead '92 and her husband, Tim, announce the birth of a son, Tanner Timothy, born Sept. 16, 2000. Tanner joins brother, Tyler, at home.
Gary '94 and Laura Cromley '93 Walters announce the birth of a daughter, Alexandra June, born March 21, 2001. They live in White River.
