Wesleyan Today

Fall 2002

a publication for alumni, family, and friends

Thank you DWU educators!

Bob Duffett DWU PresidentDakota Wesleyan University has some of the best faculty around! We talk about the way they take time to help students, both in and out of the classroom, with their schoolwork and with career planning. They are models of what we hope our students will become.

Our faculty received their training from the best universities in the country. Many received their doctorates or completed postgraduate work at major research universities, including Big Ten and Big 12 schools in addition to Cornell, MIT, the universities of Tennessee, South Carolina and Nevada, and Boston University.

In the following pages you will read stories from alumni about the professors who taught them while they were students. You will read about the amazing influence faculty have on their students, in big and small ways, some while they are still students and others not until many years later. Nonetheless, faculty leave impressions on their students.

Our faculty volunteer their time on committees and boards on and off campus. They cheer students from the basketball bleachers and the choir audience. They support student efforts in and out of the classroom. All the while they are creating bonds with students that time cannot erase.

That's what it's all about here at DWU. We are a small, caring, nurturing community working for the success and fulfillment of everyone on campus. On a small campus the faculty hold higher academic standards and students write more, discuss more and interact more. The faculty are able to conduct better, more critical assessments of their students. Not only do faculty nurture their students with the positive, "good job" type of comments, but also can correct with comments like, "You can do better." Those of you who were students here will remember the family atmosphere on campus, and those of you who are parents or friends have heard about it. Believe it; it is true!

Simply put, a great institution is made by great faculty. As you read this issue of Wesleyan Today, reflect on your days as a student and remember the faculty who helped make you who you are today. As our new vision statement says, "Dakota Wesleyan University aspires to be a leading university that educates students to identify and develop their individual talents for successful lives in service to God and the common good."
