1930s
Inda Schliemann Phillips c'30 retired in 1979 after 42 years of teaching. She lives in Hartford and is enjoying her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dorothy Alexander Collins '36 was recently honored as the volunteer of the year at the Lily Festival during Columbiaville Days. The Columbiaville Church Library was recently named the Dorothy Collins Library. Dorothy lives in Columbiaville, Mich.
Laura Stark Johnson '37 retired in August 2000, after 68 years of teaching and writing. She has published 20 books and 51 articles for professional journals. Laura lives in Morton Grove, Ill.
Howard Olsen '38 and his wife, Sigrun, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December.
James Lundstrom '39 is in the veterans' hospital in St. Cloud, Minn. He has advanced Alzheimer's disease. His wife, Ruth McCaskell Lundstrom c'37, lives in Park Rapids, Minn.
Maxine Schmidt Beardemphl c'39 and her husband, Floyd, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Nov. 26, 2001. They live in Ashton.

Harlo Fechtelkotter ex'43 is a pilot with Civil Air Patrol. He lives in Crosslake, Minn.
Marjorie Johnson Dundas '43 will soon have a book published, "Riddling Tales from around the World." Marjorie and her husband, Richard, live in Rutland, Vt.
Ted Smith '44 retired and is feeling good and enjoying skiing. He has finished writing his second book, "Attitude Determines your Quality of Life." Ted and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Tacoma, Wash.
Leonard Willett ex'44 attended the World War II Memorial dedication held in Pierre in September. Leonard, a combat veteran, had a reserved seat for the dedication. Leonard and his wife, Lavilla Doane Willett ex'45, live in Keystone.
Velma Rickenbach DeVries '45 is still active on the ranch with her grandson and his family. Velma lives in Belvidere. Velma's granddaughter is a student at DWU.
John Casey ex'46 and his wife, Leontine, visited South Dakota last summer. They made a short trip to the Black Hills and to Mitchell. The Caseys live in Sedona, Ariz.
Tessa Ocheltree Silva ex'46 is keeping very busy with exercise classes, dancing and Scrabble. Tessa lives in Carlsbad, Calif.
Wayne Rundell '47 is proud of what DWU has contributed to his life, including many friends. Wayne lives in Burnsville, Minn.
Jim Morse '49 occasionally gets back to South Dakota while doing Locem Tenens assignments with Indian Health Services. Jim and his wife, Marjorie, live in Las Vegas.
Bill Hersey ex'49 attended DWU in 1944. He would like to hear from his classmates from that year. Bill remarried in 2000. He and his wife live in Rosamond, Calif.

John Orr '50 has been the Lewis and Clark Outdoor Classroom volunteer facilitator. He has recently moved to Geddes.
Hazel Stewart Eason ex'50 now lives in the Eastern Star Home in Sumter, S.C.
Loretta "Tita" Smith Buxton '53 and her husband, Leonard, worked for the New York Conference Disaster Response Team in New York City for five weeks, assisting with relief work. The Buxtons live in Lake Ariel, Penn.
Donald '53 and Lyn Haskell ex'56 Rahn traveled to China in September. They also visited Singapore. The Rahns live in Watertown.
Vernon Ashley '54 was the subject of an article in South Dakota Magazine last year. The article is titled "White Ghost Leader" and ran in the May/June issue. He is one of two WWII veterans on his reservation. Vernon lives in Pierre.
Francis Nelson ex'54 and his wife, Maxine Isakson Nelson c'52, recently visited Bob Raymond ex'54 and his wife, ElRita, in Billings, Mont., on their way to winter in the Southwest.
Cal Schultz '57 marked 25 years of designing murals for the Corn Palace in 2001. Cal lives in Mitchell.
Gordon Fosness '57 delivered the keynote address at Mitchell Christian School's annual fall banquet. Gordie is the regional director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He and his wife, LaVonne, live in Sioux Falls.
Curtis Rolfe '57 and his wife, Leanne, traveled to Korea and China in September to visit some friends. The Rolfes live in Glen Ellyn, Ill.
Donald Lucke ex'58 retired in January. He and his wife, Iris Olson Lucke c'56, plan to travel in their motor home. The Luckes live in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Donna Hale Meeker c'58, B.A. '79 has retired after 25 years of teaching elementary school. She taught in Chamberlain, Britton and Sioux Falls. Donna and her husband, Nyle Meeker '58, live in Sioux Falls.
Dave Hallett '59 has retired from Station 19 Architects in Minneapolis, where he was director of church planning. He and his wife, Pearl, served with Nomads, a United Methodist Church RV work group, at Bisbee, Ariz., and at Albuquerque in January and February 2002.
Roger Tanquist '59 recently recorded a CD of sacred vocal music. It is dedicated to raising money for Ocean Park United Methodist Camp. Roger and his wife, Mardel, live in Ridgefield, Wash.
1960s
Betty Erickson Korzan c'60 is the vocal instructor for Kimball and Grass Ranch students. Betty and her husband, Gene, live in Kimball.
Marilyn Moeckel Felder Sweeden '60 enjoyed 24 plus years teaching, and is now semi-retired. She looks forward to traveling. She lives in Magnolia, Texas.
Ron Jacobs '61 received a Lions Club International Foundation Melvin Jones Fellowship at the District 5 SW fall rally. This is the highest form of recognition for humanitarian services the Lions Club presents. Ron's wife, Marcia Mollet Jacobs c'61, received the Distinguished Leadership Medal from the Lions Club last year. Ron and Marcia live in Rapid City.
Mike Sougstad '61 painted murals for the newly completed Middle Border Museum in Mitchell. Other pieces of his work are on display in the Fulton State Bank in Mitchell and the High Plains Heritage Center in Spearfish. Mike lives in Fulton.
Sharon Simons Frye '61 and her husband, William, have started a game farm for pheasant hunters. They live in Blairstown, Mo.
Karol Davis Eichelberg ex'61 retired in May 2000. Since then she and her husband, Elmer, have traveled to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Guatemala. The Eichelbergs live in St. Michael, Minn.
Minnietta Green Millard '63 designed the home into which she and her husband, Kent Millard '63, recently moved. Kent is a pastor at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis.
Mike Baer '64 became a member of the Board of Alumni of Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in August. He was named co-chair of the physician advisory committee of the Congress in July.
Shari Dartt Ochs '64 retired as the office manager at Golden West Telephone Company of Wall in November. She had worked there for more than 26 years. Shari and her husband, Ron, plan to spend time with their children and grandchildren.
Donna Miller Strickland '64 received a 2001 travel scholarship to attend the Oncology Nursing Society Annual Congress. Donna is a staff nurse at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Ore., where she and her husband, Jim Strickland '64, live.
Don Gatzke '64 was named district governor-elect of Rotary International for the state of Montana. He will become governor in June. Don and his wife, Mary, live in Montana.
Loren Opdahl '64 went to Korea on a Habitat for Humanity trip with former President Jimmy Carter in August to build houses. In September he and his wife, LaRee Ann, traveled to Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Loren recently retired from the Anderson Window Corporation and is enjoying his retirement.
James Taylor '65 retired as the executive vice president and general manager of the American Royal, a livestock, horse show and rodeo company. James and his wife, Karen, will retire near Mitchell.
Penny Fritze-Tietz '65 is serving as pastor of the Blaine United Methodist Church and enjoying it. Penny and her husband, Larry, live in Blaine, Minn.
Dick Carling '65 bought the Computer Factory in Los Alamitos, Calif. He builds custom computers, and repairs and upgrades computer systems. Dick and his wife, Sandy, live in Cypress, Calif.
Marge Lytle Husman '65 entertains area nursing home residents with singing and silly hats. Marge's farm dog, Jake, accompanies her on the visits. She and her husband, Edgar, live near Kimball.
Carol Johnson Hassebroek '65 has recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her treatment is going well. Carol asks her fellow DWU family members to request a CA-125 blood test and her fellow Class of 1965 members to contribute to the class scholarship. She wants to be able to greet the first recipient soon. Carol lives in De Smet.
Celia Forsch Orth '65 was recently covenanted to act as chair of Oxford Presbytery for the London Conference in the United Church of Canada. Celia lives in Burgessville, Ontario, Canada.
Ginger Glenn Wintemute '65 has been selected as the National Association of Social Workers Western Region Social Worker of the Year for 2000. She has worked at Rapid City Regional Hospital for 16 years and is the supervisor of social work, discharge planning and chaplaincy. Ginger's husband is Tom Wintemute '66.
Denny Pierson ex'67 is running for the U.S. House of Representatives. He has been a state legislator, classroom teacher and businessman. Denny and his wife, Linda, live in Sioux Falls.
Nancy Wahl Ronshaugen '67 began working with families affected by fetal alcohol syndrome in December. She is a social worker with Lutheran Social Services. Nancy and her husband, Ron, live in Watertown.
John Bittner '67 recently received a Tanner Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The university awards five of these most prestigious undergraduate teaching awards each year. John and his wife, Denise, live in Chapel Hill.
David Palmer '69 was named the general manager of Coca-Cola bottling company of Central South Dakota. He oversees plants in Mitchell, Pierre, Watertown and Huron. David and his wife, Pamela Pagel Palmer '68, live in Mitchell.
Wayne Heisinger '69, won his fourth consecutive Girls' State Track Team title in Minnesota. Wayne is president of the Girls' Track and Field Coaches Association in Minnesota. He and his wife, Cheryl Miller Heisinger '69 live in Heron Lake, Minn.
Diane Olson McEntee ex'69 recently began working as a phone triage nurse in Columbus, N.C., where she and her husband, Michael, recently moved. Diane would like to hear from her DWU classmates.
Bill Hennigar ex'69 is currently teaching business and computer classes at Weeping Water Public Schools. He has been in the Nebraska Army National Guard for 26 years, where he is a helicopter pilot. Bill and his wife, Virginia, live in Syracuse, Neb.
Janis Barrows Miller ex'69 is teaching in the Stickney schools. She and her husband, Bobby, live in Plankinton.
1970s
Ed Olson '70 has been named director of the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation. He will be responsible for all aspects of fund raising, organizing regional opportunities for planned giving to support the entire Avera Queen of Peace health care program and services. Ed and his wife, Diane, live in Mitchell.
Karen Davis Novotny '70 is teaching at Circle of Nations, a therapeutic boarding school for Native American children, in Wahpeton, N.D. Karen, her husband, Michael, and daughters live in Rosholt.
Karen Riley Sievers '70 recently received the Opal Eagles Award from the American Lung Association of Illinois and Iowa. The award represents the highest honor for outstanding volunteer service to the organization. Karen teaches sixth grade science at Callanan Middle School.
David Morse '70 was recently transferred to computer sales at Circuit City and marked his five-year anniversary with the company in March. David's wife, Bev Freeman Morse '68, is a sales coordinator for Utility Trailer. The Morses live in San Dimas, Calif.
Stan Haidle '71 has been named to New York Life Insurance Company's 2001 Executive Council. Stan and his wife, Ruth Keith Haidle ex'72, live in Mitchell.
Barbara Miller Bullock '71 has accepted a call to serve Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman, Iowa. Salem is the only church in town, so Barbara looks forward to exciting opportunities. Barbara and her husband, Keith Bullock '71, now live in Alleman.
Ruth Schilberg '71 is the dean of students for the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics, which trains people for cross-cultural ministry related to Bible translation. Ruth lives in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Dale Wintemute '71 is the department chairman of English at Lahore American School in Pakistan. He teaches English to ninth and 10th graders and is the theater director. Dale and his wife, Marlene, live in Lahore.
Joan Gould Hafner '71 is a great-grandmother three times now. Joan lives in Parkston.
Bob Tutt '72 has retired from farming and earned his master's degree in human services counseling. His wife, Elaine Hubbard Tutt '71, teaches in Kirkland, Ill. The Tutts and their children live in Kirkland.
Jim Cissell '72 is the new pastor at the Wall and Wasta Methodist churches. Jim and his wife, Marie, live in Wall. Their younger daughter, Elizabeth, is a junior at DWU.
Audrey Johnson Osswald '73 received the Post Secondary Institution Professional of the Year award for 2000-01 from the Colorado Association of Financial Aid Administrators. She is the director of financial aid at Pueblo Community College. Audrey and her husband, Dixon, live in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Deb Harrington Cap '73 and her husband, Larry, celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in November. Deb works in DWU's Institutional Advancement office. The Caps live in Mitchell.
Nanda Olson Cornish Gearhart '74 is the president of the Prairie Guild Puppetry. Her mother, Beulah Brinker Olson c'42, is a member. Both women are professional puppeteers and storytellers and attended the National Puppetry Festival in Tampa, Fla., in July.
Mel Placek '75 is one of the new directors for South Dakota Housing Development Authority. Mel and his wife, Linda Jensen Placek '75, now live in Pierre.
Vaughn Heckel '75 has a daughter, Melissa, who carried the 2002 Winter Olympic Games torch in January. She is one of 14 South Dakotans to carry it. The Heckels live in Spearfish.
Joe '78 and Maria Castillo ex'78 McBride celebrated the birth of their first grandchild. The McBrides live in San Antonio.
J. Janus Jr. '79 has received a certificate of appreciation from the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission, S.W. Ohio Area, for his contribution to the consumer advisory council in 2001.
Paula Roddewig Ruedebusch '79 is a Title I literacy teacher in the Rapid City School District. Paula and her husband, Robert Ruedebusch '78, live in Rapid City. Their daughter, Katie, served as a page in the U.S. Senate last fall. She was sponsored by Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D.
Steve Oster '79 is a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve at the Hurlburt Field near Pensacola, Fla. Steve, his wife, Carol, and their sons live in Florida. Steve's mother, Devonia Puetz Oster '71, lives in Ethan.
1980s
David Mirich '81 is a psychologist in private practice in the Denver area. He is also the director of the School Psychologists in Urban Settings Program at the University of Colorado in Denver. David, his wife, Pam, and their daughter live in Denver.
Paul Ekern '83 received the South Dakota College Cross Country Coach of the Year award from the South Dakota Cross Country/Track Coaches Association. Paul is the head track and cross country coach for men and women at DWU.
Sherman Wright '84 ran for the Rosebud Sioux Tribal vice presidency last summer. He has been the director of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe's TEA-21 Transportation Planning Office. Sherman lives in Mission.
Grant Street '85, and his wife, Shari, farm near Revillo. Grant also helps coach his boys' basketball teams. Grant and Shari have three children.
Scott Redd '85 is a major in the U.S. Army assigned to the Pentagon Renovation Program. His office is responsible for renovating the Pentagon and repairing the building after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. Scott and his wife, Tina Gallagher, live in Woodbridge, Va.
Lori Tischler Bork AA'85 started teaching in the nursing department at DWU. Lori and her husband, Jerry Bork '86, live in Mitchell.
Roger Carpenter '86 has been teaching English at James B. Conant High School in Hoffman Estates, Ill., for 13 years. He is also a certified athletic trainer for varsity sports. Roger, his wife, Cheryl, and their children live in Hanover Park, Ill.
Deb Selland Dey AA'87 is the new health nurse for Hanson County. She started her new position on July 9. Deb and her husband, Scott Dey '90, live in Alexandria with their three daughters, where Scott is a transport driver for Cenex.
Mike Duffek '87 is the new principal at Tabor and Springfield schools. He and his wife, Stephanie, live in Tabor.
Doug Wuebben '88 was recently certified as a registered diagnostic cardiac sonographer. He works as a diagnostic technician in the cardiology department of St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Doug and his wife, Milissa, live in Yankton
Jeff Palmquist '88 resigned his position as the head athletic trainer at Mitchell High School after 14 years. Jeff moved to New Orleans.
Brooks Schild '88 has begun teaching at Yankton High School. He has previously taught in the Council Bluffs Community School District. Brooks and his wife, Joan, have three children.
Mike Knutson '89 is the new economic development/housing director for Miner County Community Revitalization. Mike and his wife, Jodi, live in Howard.
Johnna Rohmer Hirt '89 has earned her master's degree in education. Johnna and her husband, Steve Hirt '89, live in Andover, Minn.
1990s
Stephen Weinkauf '90 is teaching elementary school in Edgewood, N.M., where he and his wife, Ginger, recently moved.
Lisa Pekas Rentschler '90 is working for Wirsbo, a company that specializes in tubing for plumbing and heating. Lisa, her husband, Marc Rentschler '90, and their daughter live in Savage, Minn.
Emory Hilton '91 is finishing his medical training in Oklahoma City. Emory's wife is Angie Gupton Hilton ex'93.
Michaela Goodrich Erickson '92 was crowned Mrs. South Dakota America 2001 in July. She competed in the national Mrs. America pageant in September. Michaela and her husband, Boyd Erickson '91, live in Centerville.
Gloria Hanson '92 is a grandmother for the first time. Her daughter, Crystal Hanson Moore ex'99, and son-in-law, Jeff, have blessed her with triplet grandsons. Connor, Christian and Caleb were born Nov. 17 in Sioux Falls. Gloria is a writer in the university relations office at DWU and is the technical adviser for the Phreno Cosmian.
Mary Hoy Ince '92 is teaching at Valley Center High School in Valley Center, Kan. She teaches biology and physical science and is the coordinator of the Peer Assistance and Leadership Program. Mary and her husband, Keith, live in Park City, Kan.
Lynette Gerlach '92 started teaching at the Ola School of the Chamberlain School District this fall. She has previously spent five years in the Philip area teaching country school and special education.
Jenny Evans Zephier '93 is teaching junior high math and ninth grade geometry at Andes Central School this fall. She has previous experience teaching at Crazy Horse School, Marty Indian School, and in the Andes Central district as a long-term substitute.
Lyle Miller Sr. '93 was recently promoted to the middle school art department. He also coaches middle school football and basketball and is an eighth grade adviser. Lyle, his wife, Crystal, and their children live in Pukwana.
Teri Tuschen Huska '94 is working as the Title I reading teacher in Valley Springs. Teri and her husband, Chris, moved to Brandon in May.
Jennifer Gross Cooper '95 operates the Thune's True Value in Mitchell, along with her parents and husband, Tommy.
Kardel Miller '95 is teaching fifth grade in Frisco, Texas, and coaching ninth grade basketball.
Brad Zomer '95 has begun working as a State Farm insurance agent. He recently left DWU, where he was an admissions counselor. Brad and his wife, Rhonda, a current DWU student, live in Mitchell.
Kim Van Overschelde Gamber '96 started as the new middle school special education teacher at Dell Rapids Public this fall. Kim, her husband, Jon, and their children live in Brandon.
Jeanene McKelvey Sampson '96 graduated with a master's degree in K-12 administration in August. She and her daughter, Madisyn, live in Whiting, Iowa, where Jeanene is a 7-12 principal.
Heather Persan '96 graduated with a master's degree and now teaches English in Levittown, N.Y.
Annika Russell '96 teaches business and computer classes in the Artesian-Letcher School District and also coaches volleyball and girls' track. Annika lives in Mitchell.
Gary McEldowney ex'96 is the new principal at Bennett County High School. He has taught at the school for the past four years. Gary's wife is Lori Jorgenson McEldowney '94.
Arvella Palmer '97 is the new pastor at the United Methodist churches in Wagner and Tyndall. She started her position Aug. 5.
Laurie Sharp Kor '97 is working as a regional manager for Intermedia Communications. She and her husband, Jason, live in Orland Park, Ill.
Stephanie Campbell '97 is attending North American Baptist Seminary for a master's degree in religious studies. Stephanie lives in Sioux Falls.
Kamden Miller '98 is teaching eighth grade social studies, history, government and geography this year in Kimball. He also coaches boys' basketball. Kamden's wife, Samantha Heyerman Miller '97, is a social worker for Child Protection Services in Mitchell. The Millers live in Plankinton.
Clint Lewis ex'98 began teaching at Springfield this year. He is a middle school teacher.
Angie Schley Fast '98 teaches second grade and coaches cheerleading in Iroquois. Angie's husband, Jerrad Fast '99, is farming with his dad and brother. Angie, Jerrad and their daughter live in Iroquois.
Scott Giblin '99 is a new teacher in the White Lake School this year. He teaches fifth grade and coaches basketball.
Rebecca Wharton '99 has recently taken the director of youth ministries position at a First United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo, Mich. In her previous position she worked in Wisconsin with inner-city youth from Milwaukee and Chicago.
Brady Stocklin '99 finished his master's degree last summer and started medical school at the University of South Dakota this fall.
Bob Plastow '99 recently received his private pilot license. Bob and his wife, Pam Bush Plastow '98, live in Mitchell.
2000s
Katie Patrie '00 is working as a program coordinator for the Food Pantry and Donation Center for the Community Action Program. She will attend the University of North Dakota in fall 2002 to work on her master's degree in social work. Katie lives in Bismarck, N.D.
Brendon Hansen '00 is a representative for Farmers Union Insurance with his dad and brother. Brendon lives in Irene.
Clayton Gropper '00 is the new head trainer at Mitchell High School. In addition to his training responsibilities, he teaches three health-related classes. Clayton and his wife, Jenny Stickelmyer Gropper '99, live in Mitchell.
Andy Priebe '00 is a new mortgage loan originator in the Mitchell office of Home Federal Bank. Andrew and his wife, Christie, live in Mitchell.
Gerald Evans '00 began teaching in Tyndall this year. He teaches physical education to grades kindergarten through nine and health at the high school.
Clay Ewing '01 is a new physical education teacher in Lemmon. He also teaches health for junior high school and coaches football and wrestling.
Joel Jorgensen '01 began teaching early childhood special education at Andes Central School this fall. This is Joel's first teaching position.
Lindy Pekarek '01 is the new high school social science teacher this year for the Hyde School District. She also coaches cross country and track.
Laura Malm ex'01 recently finished building a kiln in which she can fire up to 150 pieces of pottery at a time. Her pottery making business is called Whetstone Creek Pottery. In October and November her work was on display at the Pocahontas Art Center in Gregory. Laura and her two sons live in Gregory.
Dixie Larvie '01 is the new K-6 guidance counselor for the St. Francis Indian School in Mission.

Alice Heisinger Tyler '70 married Raymond Mentele July 20, 2001. Alice changed jobs after 28 years in education. She is now the receptionist/billing clerk at the Dakota Mental Health Center. The couple lives in Mitchell.
Mary Lou Pullman Kelly '75 married Wayne Hofmann June 2, 2001. The couple lives in Mitchell.
