Pay It Forward

Many ask. Many give. We wanted to know why. Wesleyan Today talked
to some alumni and DWU friends about why they give, and why they ask
others to give. The common thread is their desire to connect, to transform
and to pay back by paying forward.
Jackson Plaza:
Wesleyan Celebrates New Outdoor Living Space
Students, staff and faculty, alumni and friends gathered during Blue
& White Days in October to dedicate the newest jewel on the DWU
campus – Jackson Plaza. Officials had broken ground on the $750,000
project in October 2006. The beautiful new outdoor living space immediately
became a favorite spot for students to gather.
Sacrifice or Service
in Tanzania East Africa
Last May, a team of students lived DWU’s “Sacrifice or
Service” motto first hand. In a comprehensive effort to combine
faith and learning, we led a group of students on a mission trip to
Tanzania as the culmination of a class called “Learning and
Service in Tanzania.” Our goal? To demonstrate that a small
group could make a big difference.
Stepping
Up to the Plate
At the fall meeting of the DWU Board of Trustees, attendees discovered
how Wesleyan’s high-need student population affects the university’s
financial situation. A large number of DWU students are Pell-eligible,
qualifying for the highest amount in federal financial aid. Students
are not rich kids who write checks for their education, nor have the
majority ever come from wealthy families.
After the
Buzzer Sounds: Student-Athletes Pay It Forward
For Dakota Wesleyan University student-athletes, there is more to
being a successful Tiger than the thrill of competition. It’s
not just the time spent on the road, during practice sessions or in
the weight room; it’s the time in the community with their teammates,
living out the DWU value of service to others.
Face Value: Andrew Bakken
I never imagined that Dakota Wesleyan would help me so much in so
many different areas of my life. This school has really turned me
into a better, more well-rounded person over the last few years. It’s
a place I get to study a subject I love and be with my very best friends.
I never imagined that I would be talking that way about a school.
Get to know the face and the feelings of one member of the DWU community
in each edition of Wesleyan Today.
