Dakota Wesleyan’s Advent Service of Lessons and Carols will close the music department’s semester while ushering in the Christmas season.

The Ron and Sheilah Gates Department of Music at DWU will perform the free concert at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. There will also be a second performance this year at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9, at Geddes United Methodist Church.

“This is my favorite concert of the year,” said Dr. Clinton Desmond, director of choral activities and department chair at DWU. “The combination of word and song proclaiming the coming of the Christ child gives the truest meaning to the season. It is our hope that audience members are moved by the service and leave spiritually prepared for the Christmas season.”

The Women’s Chamber Choir, The Singing Scotchmen, the Highlanders and the Wesleyan Bells will perform a combination of traditional carols and Scripture readings. The congregation is also invited to sing along to the carols “Once in Royal David’s City” and “Silent Night.”
