DWU Performing Arts Audition Requirements
The Dakota Wesleyan University Performing Arts Department invites you to participate in our performance groups. Students wishing to be awarded a Performing Arts Scholarship must present an on-campus audition. Any student awarded a scholarship for Performing Arts must participate in the corresponding ensemble(s) for each semester that they receive the scholarships.
Students wishing to audition for a vocal scholarship must prepare two vocal solos of contrasting styles. Pop music is not appropriate for this audition, but rather music that you would sing for a solo/ensemble contest or in private voice lessons. Though it is not mandatory, a foreign song would set your audition apart. You may bring your own accompanist or one can be provided for you.
Students wishing to audition for a piano scholarship must prepare two concert solos: one from the Baroque or Classical period and the other from the Romantic period to the present.
Students wishing to audition for an instrumental scholarship must prepare one appropriate solo. Pop music is not appropriate for this audition, but rather music that you would play for a solo and ensemble contest, in lessons, or for an all-state audition.
Students wishing to enter the BFA program or audition for a theatre scholarship must prepare ONE memorized piece, not exceeding three minutes. We recommend to choose material that suits you and shows your ability to best advantage. It is generally best to play characters close to your own age and who express feelings you share or understand. While we prefer the required dramatic monologues, you may also audition using an oral interp piece.
Students interested in technical theatre will not need to audition. Instead, contact us to schedule an interview.
