Instructional Designer - Onsite or Remote

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Office of the Provost, the Instructional Designer serves as a member of the University’s Learning Team and works with program coordinators, subject matter experts, and faculty to ensure the quality, consistency, and professional relevance of the university’s online courses, certificates, and programs. The Instructional Designer is responsible for successfully introducing and incorporating pedagogical principles and learner-centered tools across a variety of academic disciplines and support courses. This is a full-time, twelve-month position.

Dakota Wesleyan has recently expanded online certificate and degree completion programs to increase access to higher education for underserved and nontraditional populations who continue to work while pursuing certificates and degrees. The university’s instructional designer will initially devote the bulk of their energies to supporting these programs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Represent and advocate for online learning perspectives within the university, including evidence-based and high impact practices, analysis of current online courses, and facilitating the design of future courses and curriculum.
  • In collaboration with the University Learning Team, provide synchronous and asynchronous training to faculty and subject matter experts on use of the LMS, instructional design methodologies, and best practices for designing and teaching online learning experiences.
  • In collaboration with program directors, facilitate the development, launch, and ongoing review of online courses, certificates, and programs.
  • Assist faculty and subject matter experts with the teaching of online courses, including implementing interactive strategies that increase student engagement in the learning process.
  • Ensure course design, course materials, and activities promote inclusivity, accessibility, and are ADA compliant. Provide accessibility guidance and assistance for instructors.
  • Research and recommend appropriate pedagogical strategies and emerging technologies into teaching and learning practice and make recommendations for their use to faculty, subject matter experts, and adjunct instructors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Instructional or Learning Design, Educational Technology, Adult Learning, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in curriculum development, instructional design, instructional technology, or a related area.
  • Knowledge of instructional design methodologies and pedagogical principles specifically knowledge of best practices in eLearning.
  • Experience with faculty and staff training and development.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.


  • Master's Degree in Instructional Design or a related field.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (Canvas preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of instructional and emerging technologies including web conferencing, screencasting, storyboarding, e-portfolio, and multimedia tools such as Adobe Suite, Apple Studio or AI tools.

The university is open to both onsite and remote candidates. Ideally, candidates will be able to visit campus a minimum of two times per semester to workshop with faculty and other members of the University’s online certificate and degree completion initiative.
