Tim Leach, of Alexandria, was awarded the Triple “D” Marketing Inc. Dakota Transit Association Scholarship Award on Monday, Feb. 12, by Palace Transit at James Valley Community Center in Mitchell.

Six students applied for the $500 scholarship and Leach was chosen through an application process that included a short essay. Triple “D” Marketing Inc. represents various markets that support vehicle cleaning and protection.

Two of the qualifications for the award included: currently enrolled in secondary education in South Dakota or North Dakota; and must have a parent or grandparent currently working in public transit in either state. The award also took into consideration community involvement, volunteering, and understanding the role public transit plays in a community.

Leach is a senior nursing major at Dakota Wesleyan and is the son of Pat and Nancy Leach. His father is an employee of Palace Transit in Mitchell.

Leach’s community involvement includes having coached the Alexandria Legion baseball team, worked with the Hanson and McCook Counties soil conservation district, and also having worked on the new addition for Hanson High School. His volunteer activities include: Gregg Wagner Memorial Walk, food drives for Hanson High and Dakota Wesleyan; Salvation Army; Mitchell Jaycees’ haunted house; and has judged the DWU science fairs.

As for public transit’s contribution to a community, Leach outlined how public transit affects those in need of health care – his chosen field – providing a safe and timely mode of transportation to and from work, school, appointments and social events.
