MITCHELL, S.D. – Two Dakota Wesleyan University students have been chosen to participate in the 2022 South Dakota Intercollegiate Band.
Grace Lewis, a junior Music Education major from Custer, and Kori Dowling, a sophomore Music Education major from Sioux Falls, were selected for the honor of joining the band, which will perform with top college musicians from across South Dakota at 11 a.m., Friday, Mar. 25, 2022, at the SDSU Performing Arts Center in Brookings. The concert is open to the public with tickets available at the door.
“I am thrilled to have Grace and Kori selected to this year's South Dakota Intercollegiate Band,” said Dr. Bethany Amundson, director of instrumental studies and director of bands at DWU. “Grace and Kori are both incredibly talented and versatile musicians, and I know they will represent DWU well.”
Lewis plays contra bass clarinet; Dowling will be performing on B-flat clarinet. The event is held in conjunction with the high school All-State Band, March 23-26. Intercollegiate Band students will also perform for the all-state band students. This year the conductor for the Intercollegiate Band is composer Aaron Perrine. Amundson expressed excitement for her students to get a chance to work with the composer.
Intercollegiate Band has not been held since 2019. Nine colleges in South Dakota offer band programs. The top musicians from these colleges are selected to form the Intercollegiate Band using a selection process of nomination and placement audition. DWU has had at least two students selected each year that the band has performed since 2015.
